L-5 Hydroxtryptophan

5-HTP, or 5-hydroxytryptophan, is used for a varitey of ailments. 5-HTP is related to L-trytophan as well as serotonin through a series of conversion processes. L-trytophan, an essential protein amino acid, creates 5-HTP which can then become serotonin, an important neurotransmitter. This conversion also allows 5-HTP to have effective analgesic activity. 5-HTP has a high absorpency rate which increases the activity and availability to the body. Some 5-HTP is metabolized in the liver while the remaining 5-HTP is circulated throughout various body tissues. During this circulation, 5-HTP easily crosses the blood-brain barrier to be converted to serotonin, which can then aid the central nervous system.

Food Sources Combining 5-HTP with other drugs such as antidepressants, carbidopa, over-the-counter prescriptions, dextromethorphan (robitussin, etc.) , monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOs), meperidine, pentazocine, or tramadol, is not recommended as the reactions may cause an increased risk of serotonin-related side effects. These side effects include the risk of serotonin syndrome or cerebral vascostrictive disorders. Some combinations, as with carbidopa, may cause aggressive behavior, speech impairment, anxiety, insomnia, or restlessness. 5-HTP should not be taken by women pregnant or nursing. The use of 5-HTP with vitamin B6 may help increase the effects and could be helpful. Avoid taking 5-HTP and St. John's Wort or SAMe, as they may increase the risk of side effects.

Special Considerations There have been some reported side effects with the usage of 5-HTP. They include nausea, diarrhea, heartburn, stomach pain, loss of appetite, vomiting and difficulty breathing. 5-HTP can cause an increase of serotonin, somtimes large doses may cause excess development, and this may result in neurogolical side effects such as dialated pupils, loss of muscle coordination, blurring of vision, and extra sensitive reflexes. As 5-HTP is closely related to L-Tryptophan, it has been indicated in asymptomatic eosinophilia and eosinophilia myalgia syndrome (EMS), although there have been no conclusive studies. Should be avoided during pregnancy. B6, magnesium and niacine help 5-HTP conver into serotonin.

Cautions Combining 5-HTP with other drugs such as antidepressants, carbidopa, over-the-counter prescriptions, dextromethorphan (robitussin, etc.) , monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOs), meperidine, pentazocine, or tramadol, is not recommended as the reactions may cause an increased risk of serotonin-related side effects.
