Benefits of Calendula

Wonders of Calendula (A Flower Like No Other)

Calendula is known in herbalist circles as the “flower of the sun” for its phenomenal healing power. It is a powerful herb, yet gentle, possessing no known drug interactions, no toxic effects and no adverse effects for most people to use long term. It is an edible flower and is safe for all ages.

Actually a member of the marigold family,Calendula Officinalis has been used for centuries on multiple continents, and it is one of the most versatile herbs in the plant kingdom. Early Christians used the flower to adorn shrines to the Virgin Mary and other saints as a powerful protective. They referred to it as “Mary’s Gold”, thus the name Marigold. Calendula is one of ancient India’s most sacred flowers. There, Calendula garlands have been used historically to ward off negative energy and have been a symbol of peace and protection against evil.

Our Farm and How it is Grown

We grow a potent array of organic calendula officinalis on our farm in the Pacific Northwest.  The non-GMO flowers are grown using biodynamic methods and ethically harvested so that the nutritional constituents remain intact.  This provides the consumer with an exceptionally nutrient dense herb that will prove itself when used for a multitude of skin conditions.  Bodyceuticals premium Organic Calendula Oil and Salve are the best-selling products for this reason.

When we pick our freshly grown calendula at the peak of the season, we can feel right away a sticky resin coming from the flower. These resins contain a potent array of powerful compounds such as many fatty acid esters, quercetin, rutin and ubiquinone, iodine, manganese, and other nutrients. All these phytonutrients helps protect skin from free-radical damage and play an active role in repairing damaged skin.

 Benefits of Calendula

Calendula has been scientifically studied and is a known multi-tasker that inhibits bacterial and viral microorganisms.  It can reduce inflammation of tissues by inhibiting lypoxygenase, an enzyme that damages cell wall structure.   It stimulates the appetite of lymphocytes, which helps rid the wound of debris and dead cells and increases angiogenic activity, the growth of new blood vessels and nerve cells in tissue.  It’s been used historically for severe injuries because it helped wounds heal cleanly.   Calendula increases the collagen level in wounds, helping prevent formation of scar tissue and assisting the healing tissue in remaining supple.  You will want to apply it right away to help mitigate scarring.

Calendula oil’s most popular traditional uses are for skin conditions including:

  • dry, cracked skin
  • itchy inflamed skin
