Over the years I’ve known a lot of different types of doctors. The ones I’ve liked the most were the ones who were primarily healers rather than just scientists. They approached their patients with warmth and a true empathy. They suffered a bit with me or the people I knew. I would come away from the experience feeling like they were a partner in my healthcare.
Then there is the doctor I’ll call the scientist type. They say, for instance, this treatment has a 72% chance of success in relieving your symptoms. There is a distance and a remoteness to them that makes me feel like something is lacking. I feel like I am partnered with a treatment method a the doctor.
Someone told me after they graduated medical school that the A students went on into research, the B students were ok doctors, but the C students had all the patients. I don’t know if there is any truth to this but I think maybe the C students sometimes become better healers. They doubt the patient less and communicate differently with the patient.
When drugs are researched the results often show placebo to work in 50% of the patients. Imagine that… a sugar pill can sometimes help 50% of the patients! Now remember the “test subject” is told there is a 50% chance this has any active ingredient. Test subject… doesn’t that make you feel all warm and fuzzy? Enhanced placebo is different because it can be given with empathy and caring. The doctor can say this will work for you! That difference in approach and technique enhances the healing process. That is where healers are important, they are doctors who “enhance” whatever treatment they are using and turn on your body’s inner healing process. This is an art and isn’t easy to teach.
Medicine will always be an art. There will always be those who have the gift of healing in their touch and their words. To me those are the people I look for as doctors. Not that I want them to be uninformed but I want them to have that something special. I want them to excel first in being a healer followed by being a good scientist.
