Hawthorn and Beetroot May Reduce the Risk of Cardiovascular Disease

Cardiovascular disease, or heart disease, is a serious health condition that affects the heart and blood vessels.  A number of risk factors exist, some of which are unavoidable, but recent research has sought to find a way to reduce some of the risks.

Major Risk Factors for Heart Disease:

  • Old Age
  • Male Gender
  • Family History
  • Smoking
  • High Cholesterol
  • Hypertension
  • Diabetes
  • Sleep Disorders
  • Sedentary Lifestyle

Hawthorn in Medicine

In the first century AD, Romans used hawthorn to treat heart problems, and later in the Middle Ages hawthorn was a medicine for congestive heart failure.  Even today, in Europe, hawthorn extract is used to treat circulatory problems, among them, high blood pressureHawthorn has been associated with heart health, and since it has been a treatment for heart problems for centuries, researchers devised a new study that has implications for patients with heart disease today.

New Research

A recent study was conducted to determine whether a combination of beetroot and hawthorn berry could effectively alter risk factors for cardiovascular disease.  30 individuals, all over the age of 40, participated in the study, and each had at least three cardiovascular risk factors.  Participants were placed in two different groups with one receiving the hawthorn-beetroot blend, and the other receiving a placebo twice daily for the duration of one month.

Most of the individuals who were given the herb blend experienced a reduction of triglycerides as compared to their levels prior to the study and to those in the placebo group.  Therefore researchers concluded that taking a combination of hawthorn and beetroot may be an effective solution for many people in terms of reducing the risk factors of cardiovascular disease
