HCG Diet

Potential Health Problems Associated with the HCG Diet

Human chorionic gonadotropin or HCG is a hormone that is produced by the pituitary gland.  It is produced during pregnancy and is essential for the growth of the fetus.  A link has been found between HCG levels and morning sickness, and this may be why many believe that taking HCG drops suppresses appetite. Often HCG is taken in combination with african mango which is also an appetite suppressant.

The HCG Diet

The HCG diet consists of taking HCG and also restricting caloric intake to 500 calories per day.  HCG is used to burn fat, and this is done in conjunction with a low calorie diet for fast weight loss.  Originally the HCG diet was only used to help obese people lose weight.  For those who choose to use this diet, it should be used under medical supervision, and it should only be used for a short period of time.

While the HCG diet has become popular, questions arise as to its effectiveness from a long-term perspective and whether or not it is safe.  People who are not obese should not use the HCG diet as the health risks are considerable for those who are in the normal weight range.  Even for those who are obese, due to the extreme caloric restriction the diet cannot be used long-term, and therefore its results will not last. In addition, there are concerns for obese people who choose to use this diet as such calorie restriction can potentially result in a variety of different health problems.

Possible Problems with the HCG diet:

  • Metabolism can slow down and can cause more weight gain when back off the diet
  • Catabolism of body’s own protein and loss of muscle tissue
  • Not enough nutrition
  • Ketosis
  • Depression
  • Development of osteoporosis from lack of nutrition
  • Anemia from lack of nutrients

 Long-term Weight Loss Solutions

Long-term, maintained weight loss requires discipline and a change in eating habits and lifestyle. For successful dieting that will allow you to keep the weight off long-term, you should set realistic, achievable weight loss goals.  It is recommended that you set a goal to lose one pound per week so that the weight loss is slow, steady and sustainable.

Achieving a healthy weight is essential for overall health and wellness.  However, how you achieve that weight can also significantly impact your health.  It is important to consider your options carefully and to make sure that you are not losing weight too quickly.  The goal is to maintain a healthy weight long-term and it is best to find a diet that can help you accomplish that goal.
