Certain foods contain high levels of histamine. These foods in certain individuals may cause food related intolerances. We make in our guts an enzyme called diamine oxidase (histaminase). This enzymes job is to break down the histamine in our guts that we get from foods with high levels of histamine. If our body has a deficiency of this enzyme we can find ourselves intolerant of different types of high histamine level foods.
It is important to note that there are two syndromes that can be confused with each other. People can confuse food sensitivity with food allergies. Food allergies are a serious problem and can be life threatening. They are triggered by the immune system and need to be monitored by your physician. These foods need to be continually avoided.
Food intolerance on the other hand isn’t as serious, however symptoms can include digestive problems, fatigue, headaches, and more. This may be due to a deficiency in diamine oxidase. Again this is triggered by foods high in histamine.
Foods that may be high in histamine include:
- Alcohol, wine, beer
- Aged and smoked fish
- Soy sauce
- Cheese especially aged cheese
- Tomatoes eggplant mushrooms as well as canned vegetables
- Black tea
- Many more
So an option may be to supplement your diet with diamine oxidase when eating food high in histamine. Histame is a product that is designed for this purpose. The product is designed resist the acid in your stomach and get into your gut where it is needed. It is a great product for food intolerance support.
