Infant Formula Linked to Positive Effects on Child’s Brain Development

Link between DHA-enriched formula in infancy and positive cognitive outcomes in childhood


Infants who were fed with formula enriched with long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFA) starting from birth up to 12 months of age scored way better on a number of intelligence tests that were conducted among kids ages 3-6 years old. The study found that the children showed faster developments in tasks like pattern discrimination, rule-learning and inhibition. According to the study director and KU professor of psychology, John Colombo, “These results support the contention that studies of nutrition and cognition should include more comprehensive and sensitive assessments that are administered multiple times through early childhood.”
