Multiple Vitamins, Are They Good For You?

Recently a study was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition1 to determine if there was any correlation between multiple vitamins and heart attack risk in women.

It was a large study including more than 31,000 women with no history of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and 2,000 with a history of CVD. This was a long term study of 10 years. There were nearly 1000 cases of heart attack (MI) in the group of women with no previous history of CVD and 269 cases of MI in those with previous history.

The rate of heart attack was lower in women who were taking a multiple vitamin than women who weren’t. It was even lower in women who were taking multiple vitamins and additional supplements. The rate was the lowest in the women with no previous history of CVD who’d been taking a multiple vitamins for over 5 years.

This was a well-designed study of a significant population showing good results using a multiple vitamin. One of the most frequent questions I am asked is “what vitamins do I need?” I tell everyone that they should be on a multiple vitamin before they consider taking anything else. I think most healthy people can do very well on a good quality multiple and maybe just add vitamin D.

However then next question is “What multiple vitamin should I take?” That is often a difficult question to answer, as not all multiple vitamins are created equal. Someone today asked me what I thought of a specific multiple. I have to admit I am a bit biased when it comes to multiples as I have one that I use and we also use it in practice with all our patients. I suggest to all patients and friends that they use Tyler Multiplex-2 – we see patients that start taking another multiple after they have been discharged return to the office and say I felt so much better on the Multiplex, I need to get some more.

Some people have difficulties taking pills. Finding a liquid multiple that people can tolerate isn’t always easy. Often the taste is a big turn off, but I’ve found the Tropical Mega Plus with Multi-vitamins and minerals 32 Ounces by Tropical Oasis to be a good multiple vitamin with a pleasant taste.

With any nutrition program a multiple vitamin is the foundation of supplementation. It helps make up for a poor diet and even for the fact that many foods today are depleted of many of their healthy nutrients.
