A New Pill for Diabetes Treatment and Prevention?

A New Pill for Diabetes Treatment and Prevention?

Scientists are currently researching a potential breakthrough that could prevent or even reverse type 2 diabetes.

The Study

Research was conducted on mice to determine possible correlations for treatment of diabetes in humans. Young, healthy mice were fed high calorie diets to bring on type 2 diabetes. They were then injected with the compound NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide), which is found in the body but decreases naturally with age or when there is high caloric intake.

NMN was found to be effective in restoring normal blood sugar levels in the mice. It also lowered high levels of cholesterol in diabetic mice. Researchers found that giving the chemical to non-diabetic mice did not hurt them which suggests that, for humans, the pill could be taken to prevent diabetes without causing adverse effects.

The treatment was found to be particularly effective in female mice, possibly due to female sex hormones such as estrogen. After only one injection of NMN, symptoms of type 2 diabetes were reversed in female mice, returning blood sugar levels to normal. After further study of the effects on mice and determining proper dosage, researchers hope to conduct a human study.

Diabetes is becoming an ever-increasing health problem, with age and high calorie diets being the main culprits. This new research offers hope of an exciting and effective treatment plan that could benefit millions.
