NSAIDs Raises Risk of Stroke and Atrial Fibrillation

Chronic pain is always difficult to treat. Patients that suffer with the chronic pain of arthritis are looking for relief not only from their pain but also their inflammation.  However standard treatments have their limitations and come with a variety of side effects.

A recent study in the British Medical Journal found that non-aspirin NSAIDs and COX 2 inhibitors increased risk for atrial fibrillation. Atrial fibrillation also increases the risk of developing a stroke. The large study included over 30,000 patients with long term use of NSAIDs and COX 2 inhibitors. These medications increased the risk of fibrillation especially in new users of the medication. For new users the risk of atrial fibrillation was increased by 40-70% depending, with the largest increase due to COX 2 inhibitors.

Alternative Methods to Manage Inflammation:

Curcumin

I’ve been talking for months about Meriva curcumin and how helpful it can be in inflammation. Meriva because of its advanced absorption system helps to get the curcumin into the blood were it works as a COX 2 inhibitor. Curcumin has been used safely as a spice for years.

Medical Food with and Diet

Using a Medical food that is designed to provide nutritional support for the body and inflammation has been very helpful in our practice. Ultra InflamX by Metagenics is a product that our patients love and many say they can’t do without it. It is used as a meal replacement and works well when combined with the Anti-inflammatory Diet.

Following an anti-inflammatory diet can be very helpful. The diet consists of elimination of a variety of food such as wheat, dairy, gluten, yeast, soy, corn, egg, artificial sweeteners, flavors and colors.  However it isn’t only about excluding foods but also including food that decrease and modulate inflammation.

An Elimination Diet may also be helpful to determine what foods are triggering inflammation in your body. Eating low glycemic food is also helpful in reducing oxidative stress in your body. A low glycemic diet helps keep inflammation to a minimum.

Using alternative treatments for pain makes more and more sense daily given the dangers of many of the prescription and over the counter medications used for pain.

  1. As much as possible we don’t like resorting to OTC and prescription medications every now and then. My wife and I will surely try this.
