Eating in the Raw-My Experiment with the Raw Food Diet By John Montague

I went on the raw diet more or less out of desperation. Having had a case of Lyme disease that went undiagnosed for a long period of time, I was left with post Lyme syndrome. Most of my symptoms were very similar to fibromyalgia. I had a great deal of pain and hated climbing any steps. I stopped enjoying skiing this year due to the constant discomfort. The other symptom was a continual brain fog.

Now for the last couple of years in the back of my mind I had been saying to myself that I should maybe try the raw diet. Then this year I was listening to sports radio and I heard John Salley talking about what the raw diet had done for his life and how he felt much better on it. At the Natural Products Show in Anaheim at the Vitamix both they had Judita Wignall there autographing copies of her book Raw and Simple with nice tasting raw smoothies.

One morning I got up to ski and was in just too much pain to want to try. I went to eat lunch that day and climbing the steps was excruciating. After climbing the steps I said to my wife, “I’m going to try the raw diet”.

I went inside and downloaded a Raw Diet Book, Going Raw on my kindle and started to read. On the way home that night I stopped and bought raw food diet supplies.

Raw Diet Equipment

The next few days I did a lot of reading about the diet and quickly realize how important it is to have a Vitamix. It was one of the most important tools for the diet and I was grateful that I already had one. I did buy a couple of pieces of equipment, one was a spirlizer and the other was a food dehydrator.

The spiralizer is great as it allows you to turn things like zucchini and squash into noodles. It is a great tool and makes eating a variety of foods fun.

The dehydrator was great for drying out the nuts that I spouted. It was also great for making the raw onion bread and the flax crackers that I used on the diet.

If there is one tool for the diet it would be the Vitamix. I used that every morning to make my smoothie. Then I used it every evening to make whatever sauce I’d put over my evening veggies.

The Results

In the next few days I notice a huge improvement in the pain. The results were so dramatic I would suggest to anyone with post Lyme or fibromyalgia to try the raw diet to see if it works for you. In the 30 days while I was totally raw I lost over 20 lbs. One thing that surprised me was that I was rarely hungry on the raw diet. I found that eating raw kept me very full. My brain fog started to clear at a slower pace but did start to dissipate.

The Trials of the Raw Diet

There is a learning curve when trying to do the raw diet. I love good food and just eating a lot of veggies and fruit would have not worked for me. But learning to cook without heat took reading a lot of blogs and a number of raw diet books.

Sourcing some of the food was also difficult. Finding young Thai coconuts is really hard in this area but they were worth it as the taste was incredible. Raw nuts weren’t always easy to find.

When you are the only one eating raw in the family it is more of a struggle and I think harder to succeed. But we somehow got through it with my wife enjoying often the tasty raw cashew creams with her fish or chicken.

Going out to eat is very hard. I’m not one who cares that much for a salad with some oil and lemon. But in most places that was what was available. If going raw plan to stay in and eat. You’ll feel better.

While food preparation wasn’t too long it often took time to use dehydrator and time to spout nuts to get ready for a meal. It is best to make sure you have a plan for the day as far as meals go.

The Aftermath

After 30 days I did add a small amount of protein back into the diet. I started with fish and a small amount of chicken. When going out I usually eat a salad but now if I’m in a good Thai restaurant I will add some cooked vegetarian Thai dishes.  I also like my tomato sauce warm and the heat frees lycopene from the tomato.

I’m now about 80-90% raw and I feel good. I wouldn’t hesitate to go back to 100% and suspect I may do that a couple of times a year just to detox.

Raw Recipes

Best Morning Smoothie (2 servings)

  1. Banana
  2. Apple core removed
  3. 1” slice of ginger outside removed
  4. Hand full baby spinach
  5. 4 tablespoons hemp protein powder
  6. 3 cups raw milk (coconut, hemp, almond)

Blend all together in Vitamix on high till smooth.
