Sesame Oil Boosts the Effectiveness of Diabetes Medications
Type 2 diabetes, in addition to being difficult to manage, is linked with many additional health complications. While medication provides a reasonable system for managing the disease, researchers are working to find ways to increase its effectiveness. Diabetes is a serious illness that significantly affects overall health and wellness, but adding sesame oil to the diet may result in more effective management and treatment.
Occurrences of Diabetes Often Coincides with the Following Conditions:
- Heart Disease
- High Blood Pressure
Sesame oil is most frequently used in Asian cooking, but is also used in massage and stress management. The oil is rich in antioxidants and polyunsaturated fats, which has lead researchers to explore its capacity for helping to control blood pressure. More recently, it has been studied to determine its effect on type 2 diabetes when taken in conjunction with diabetes medication.
A recent study was conducted which included 60 individuals with type 2 diabetes. The 60 participants were separated into three groups with one taking only sesame oil, another taking a diabetes medication alone, and the other group taking both sesame oil and a diabetes medication. The first group received approximately 35 grams of sesame oil each day in the form of salad dressing or used in cooking.
The participants LDL, total cholesterol levels and triglycerides were evaluated after 60 days. The group that received the sesame oil alone experienced a 20% decrease in total cholesterol, a 33.8% drop in LDL and a 14% decrease in triglycerides. However, the group that took sesame oil in combination with the diabetes medication saw the best results. They experienced a 22% decrease in total cholesterol, a 38% drop in LDL and a 15% drop in triglycerides. In addition, the two groups that consumed the sesame oil saw increases in HDL with the most substantial increase in the group taking the drug and the oil combination. The combination group alone experienced a significant reduction in blood sugar, which lead researchers to conclude that a combination of sesame oil and diabetes medication is an extremely effective treatment for diabetes.
