The Health Benefits of L-Lysine

The Health Benefits of L-Lysine

Most people view a cold sore as something that is an eye sore and the unfortunate people that suffer from them find them annoying, embarrassing, and painful. In most cases the cold sore is simply a mild discomfort and eye sore, but it can be something much worse if left untreated or the person has other serious health concerns. It is for this reason that you should seek the help and advice of a medical professional if you are suffering from cold sores.

Cold sores are caused by a virus known as the herpes simplex virus (HSV). This is a virus that will never be cured, but can be treated and controlled with medication. Most of the people suffering from this ailment have the HSV type 1, which is the most common and easiest to control. This is also the least dangerous form of the virus. The HSV type 2 is the virus that can cause other health complications if your immune system is already compromised.

Many that suffer from cold sores feel that they are alone, but the statistics show that about 40 percent of Americans suffer from repeated cold sores. Interestingly enough some people will report suffering from a cold sore only once and then never again. Scientists have looked into this phenomenon and have found that the body will build up antibodies to stop the virus from coming back.

The 40 percent of American adults, who were not lucky enough to build these antibodies, are normally treated with a medication called L-Lysine. The L-Lysine is an amino acid, which can also be considered a building block of proteins and is the main ingredient for cold sore medication. Doctors will prescribe medication with L-Lysine and direct their patients to apply it directly to the cold sore or it may be prescribed to be taken orally. The oral medication is usually prescribed for people with frequent requiring cold sores or for people that suffer from cold sores all over their bodies.

Although L-Lysine is most commonly used in medications for cold sores it has recently been used to improve athletic performance. Interestingly enough L-Lysine is one of the nine amino acids that cannot be produced by the body, but is needed to help grow and repair tissue. L-Lysine’s ability to help the growth and repair of tissue is why many sports players have chosen to take supplements. This amino acid will help them build muscle and heal after an injury.
