Leaky Gut Syndrome: What Is It?

 

“Leaky gut syndrome” is said to have symptoms including bloating, gas, cramps, food sensitivities, and aches and pains. But it’s something of a medical mystery. Leaky gut syndrome is generally not recognized by many conventional doctors, but evidence reveals that it is a real problem affecting the linings of the intestines. Also referred to as increased intestinal permeability, it is the outcome of intestinal lining that has been damaged, making the intestines ineffective in protecting the internal environment and the ability to filter the nutrients as well as other biological substances. “From an MD’s standpoint, it’s a very gray area,” says gastroenterologist Donald Kirby, MD, director of the Center for Human Nutrition at the Cleveland Clinic. “Physicians don’t know enough about the gut, which is our biggest immune system organ.”
