What Are Probiotics?

Probiotics for Your Health

You have bacteria living in your intestines. Some of them could make you sick; however there are also bacteria that are actually beneficial. These “friendly” bacteria or probiotics help keep bad bacteria and yeast from growing in your intestinal tract causing intestinal dysbiosis. Intestinal dysbiosis is a bacterial imbalance that results in overgrowth of bad bacteria and yeast.  Normally you have an abundance of friendly bacteria; however antibiotic treatment, stress and poor dietary choices may all cause intestinal dysbiosis.

Probiotics also help make vitamin K and keep your immune system functioning properly. They adhere to the intestinal walls and create a protective “barrier” between the pathogens and the intestinal wall.  This is important since 80% of our immune system is found in the intestines.  This barrier helps prevent the pathogens from making you ill.

Why Take Probiotics?

Probiotics can restore the balance of bacteria in your digestive tract.

When the bad bacteria and yeast become overgrown in your intestinal tract, you have a condition called dysbiosis. Dysbiosis has been linked with disorders like vaginal yeast infections, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Crohn’s disease, Colitis, Antibiotic Associated Diarrhea (AAD), C. Difficile infection, E. coli infection, traveler’s diarrhea, and rheumatoid arthritis.  Common causes of dysbiosis are stress, age, poor dietary habits and especially when on antibiotic treatment. The antibiotics that you take for killing an infection will also kill the healthy bacteria in your digestive tract.

Now, I know what you are thinking, “I already eat yogurt with probiotics.”  While it is true yogurt contains probiotics, the probiotics found in yogurt are not protected against your stomach acid.  Between 40-50% of the bacteria will be destroyed by your stomach acid and not reach your intestine where it is needed.  That is why taking a probiotic supplement is important
