Current study shows researchers probed the frequency of relaxation techniques which involve imagery, deep breathing, biofeedback and muscle relaxation. The application of CAM was also delved into and categorized in four parts namely; Alternative and mind-body medicine and this includes; meditation, Tai chi and Yoga. The other type is called Manipulative practices: massage, chiropractic and osteopathic treatments are under this category. Other CAM practices which consist of acupuncture, Ayurverdic medicine, homeopathy and naturopathy. Non-vitamin and non-mineral supplements, specifically those for insomnia treatment like melatonin and valerian are under Natural Products.
Researchers found that use of both relaxation and CAM practices are common among people with insomnia than in individuals without. Although, most people with insomnia that used these therapies were not using them particularly to treat their insomnia.
Study showed more women suffered from insomnia more than men and it applied to older people too especially the ones with lesser education and income levels. The most common kind of relaxation used was deep breathing exercisesand frequently used among the four categories was natural products followed by manipulative practices. Researchers also discovered that application of natural products for treating insomnia was very low.
