Essential Oils
Essential Oils are the volatile aromatic essences produced by hundreds of aromatic plants through the process of photosynthesis. In other words, it is a plants essential oil that gives it its unique and wonderful smell. Most plants contain only a small amount of essential oil, as these oils are very potent. This is why only a small amount is typically used in a therapeutic application. The essential oil of most plants is contained in the flower, but there are many other plants that store their essential oil in the leaves, peel, root, bark or seed. This determines the part of the plant that is gathered for distillation. Through the process of distillation, essential oils are extracted from the plants for use. Pure essential oils carry a tremendous amount of plant energy; therefore, even a very small quantity can have significant healing power. Essential oils are often used in aromatherapy for their healing and/or sensual properties. Certain oils can be used topically for their antimicrobial properties; these oils must be used carefully as they are potent.
