European Vervain
European Vervain (Verbena officinalis) is a native of the Mediterranean region that is now cultivated worldwide. European Vervain is commonly known as Verbena, Herb of the Cross, Holy Herb, Enchanter's Plant, Pigeon Weed, Pigeon's Grass. and Simpler's Joy. European Vervain has a white or purple flower. Both the flower and the leaves are used for medicinal purposes.
European Vervain has a couple of constituents thought to be active, glycosides, such as verbenalin and aucubin, and volatile oils. Research has been done, but was inconclusive, on the antiviral and antimicrobial activities of Vervain. Research is also being done in claims that Vervain has anti-inflammatory and diuretic abilities as well as acts as a cough and broncitis relief.
