Fenugreek
Fenugreek, known scientifically as Trigonella foenum-graecum, is a member of the Fabaceae/Leguminosae family. Fenugreek is used for the ripe, dried seed, which has a bitter taste and distinct odor. Thus, Fenugreek is commonly used as a spice in food.
The active constituents of Fenugreek are trigonelline, 4-hydroxyisoleucine, and fenugreekine. Fenugreek also contains flavonoids, mucilages, proteins, protinase inhibitors, sterols, steroid saponins, steroid saponin-peptide ester, and a volatile oil.
Fenugreek seed has been used for centuries and can be seen in both Chinese and Indian traditional medicines. The herb can be found throughout the Mediterraneaen region but it mainlu cultivated in southern France, Turkey, northern Africa, India, and China.
Fenugreek has been used for loss of apetite and inflammation of the skin, among other ailments.
