L-Cysteine is a nonessential amino acid that can be produced from methionine and serine. L-Cysteine is involved in the synthesis of proteins. L-Cysteine is important to the maintanence of the cellular redox state. This means, that during certain periods, a depletion of glutathione may occur which allows the tissues to be exposed to oxidative stress, which in turn corrupts cell integrity. L-Cysteine is responsible for manufacturing glutathione which can prevent this degradation.
At the time, there have been no recorded drug interactions with the usage of l-cysteine. However, when zinc and l-cysteine combine, there is an increase in the absorption of zinc while vitamin C may hinder the oxidation of l-cysteine into l-cystine.

N-Acetyl-Cysteine, or NAC, is a more stable form of the amino acid, l-cysteine. NAC is considered both an amino acid and an antioxidant.
