Vinpocetine (Eburnamenine-14-carbocylic acid, Ethyl ester) is a synthetic derivatives of vincamine, a compound found in the periwinkle plant, Vinca minor. Vinpocetine appears to have a variety of pharmological effects although the responsible mechanisms of action have yet to be identified. Vinpocetine has enhanced cerebral blood flow without affecting peripheral blood flow. It also stimulates cerebral metabolism and increases glucose and oxygen consumption by the brain. Vinpocetine has demonstrated other abilities as well in studies. Vinpocetine is often used to enhance the memory and for possible neuroprotective and anticonvulsant effects related to stroke.

Food Sources Orally, vinpocetine may cause gastric discomfort, anxiety, nausea, headache, sleep disturbance, and facial flushing.
