Blessed thistle (Cnicus benedictus) is a member of the Asteraceae/Compositate family. Blessed thistle is found in various parts of Europe. The flowering tops, leaves, and upper stems can all be used in medicinal formulas. Blessed thistle contains a volatile oil, triterpense, flaovoides, lignans, and the sesquiterpene lactones cnicin, salonitenolide, and artemisifolin. Blessed thistle has been used for appetite and indigestion, colds, and fever. Blessed thistle has also demonstrated diuretic, expectorant, and antidiarrheal properties.
