Marapuama, or Muira Puama (Ptychopetalum olacoides) is an Amazon herb used for centuries. Marapuama is valued for aphrodisiac effects and as a tonic for the nervous system. Major symptoms for which Marapuama is indicated in the Brazilian Amazon include memory, depression, sexual impotence and tremors. These uses indicate that marapuama may affect several neurotransmitter systems. Marapuama contains tannins, terpenic compounds, saponins, flavonoids and phenolics in the roots, and tannins and terpenic compounds in the root bark.
