Pantothenic Acid is an essential nutrient included in the B Vitamin family, often referred to as B5. Pantothenic Acid demonstrates antioxidant abilities as well as the ability to prevent lipid peroxidation of the cells. Pantothenic Acid is the precursor of coenzyme A, which has many important function in the body such as the release of energy from carbohydrates, the creation and degradation of fatty acids, and the production of sterols, steroid hormones, etc. Pantothenic Acid has also been indicated in normal epithelial function. There has been some evidence of anti-inflammatory activity. Pantothenic Acid acts as an intermediary during the metabolization of carbohydrates, protein and lipids. It can be manufactured in the body through the conversion of dexapanthenol.
The prolonged use of antibiotics may decrease the production of all B vitamins. Pantothenic Acid should not be combined with cholinergic drugs as additive effects may occur. High doses of pantothenic acid may also hinder the absorption of biotin.
Pantothenic Acid is well tolerated by most people in the recommended dosage. High doses of pantothenic acid may cause diarrhea.
