Phytoene

Phytoene is a precursor to carotenoids. Phytoene comes from geranyl geranyl diphosphate (GGPP). Carotenoids are essential for life. They are the natural pigments, of yellow, orange, and red hues, found in plant and animal life. Carotenoids, as a dietary supplement, act as antioxidants, protecting cells from oxidation damage. Carotenoids are also the precursor to vitamin A, which is essential to vision. They are also used as coloring agents.
