Perilla Seed Extract
Perilla (Perilla frutescens) is found in India, Burma, Japan, and China. Perilla belongs to the Lamiaceae/Labiatae family. The applicable parts of perilla are the leaf and seed. The herb is about 1 m high with small flowers, a gray-brown fruit, and glossy, downy-haired leaves. Perilla contains multiple flavones. The major flavones apigenin, shishonin, and luteolin can be found in both the leaf and seed. The seed oil also contains fatty acid alpha-lineolic acid. Perilla is thought to help asthma due to the alpha-lineolic acid effects on leukotrienes. Perilla is also used for nausea, sunstroke, to induce sweating and as an antispasmodic.
