Yerba Mate Leaf

Mate (Ilex paraguariensis) is a very popular source of tea found in South America. Mate is an evergreen with white flowers and red fruit. The dried or roasted leaves are used. Mate is often called Yerba Mate. It is actually a good source of caffeine. Mate also contains theobromine, theophylline, phytol, stigmasterol, and squalene. It has tannins, N-nitroso compounds, iron, phosphorus, calcium, thiamine, riboflavin, vitamin C and vitamin E.

Mate stimulate the central nervous system and has a diuretic effect. It also increases the force of heart contractions, affects heart rhythm, and breaks down sugars and fats in the body. Traditionally, Mate has been used for fatigue, kidney and bladder stones, and urinary tract infections.

Food Sources Avoid mate if sensitive to caffeine. Mate poses no problems when taken at normal dosage levels. However, high doses of caffeine taken regularly can lead to restlessness, irritability, insomnia, palpitations, dizziness, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, and headache.
