Red Clover, Trifolium pratense, is a member of the Fabaceae/Leguminosae family. The flowering tops can be used in medicinal formulas. Red clover is made up of over 100 different chemicals. Red clover contains volatile oil, isoflavonoids, coumarin derivatives, and cyanogenic glycosides. Red clover has demonstrated estrogenic effects and is often used for menopausal symptoms. Red clover also has been used for indigestion, cough, and bronchitis. Red clover has also demonstrated cardioprotective effects.
