Centaury is also known as the Bitter Herb for the taste. Centuary is scientifically classified in the Gentianaceae family and is referred to as Centaurium erythraea. The bitter constituents of Centuary are amarogentin, gentiopicroside, and swertiamarin.
Centaury increases gastric secretion and salivation due to the bitter taste. The herb is commonly used for dyspeptic complaints, loss of apetite, and poor gastric secretion. Traditionally, it has also been used for fever and kidney stones. Externally, Centuary is used for wound treatment.
