Horseradish (Armoracia rusticana) has been used for thousands of years. It is a member of the Brassicaceae/Cruciferae family. Horseradish is native to the Volga-Don region of Russia although it can now be found growing throughout the world. The fresh or dried root is used medicinally. Horseradish is characterized by a sharp, often bitter taste; it is often used in cooking to add that extra zing.
Horseradish has been used traditionally for broncitis, cough, and urniary tract infections. It has demonstrated antimicrobial activities as well as antispasmodic properties. Horseradish has also been used to stimlulate local blood flow, for stomach disorders, digestive complaints, and minor aches.

Special Considerations Because Horseradish can irritate the stomach lining and other mucous membranes, do not take it if you have stomach or intestinal ulcers. Also avoid it if you have kidney disease, and do not give it to children under 4.
Cautions If large amounts of horseradish are consumned, gastrointestinal upset, bloody vomit and diarrhea, and irritation of the mucous membrane and the urinary tract may occur. Take only recommended amounts.
