Horsetail, scientifically known as Equisetum arvense, is a member of the Equisetaceae family. Horsetail is named for the bristle-like appearance at the joints of the stems. These stems are what is collected for medicinal use.
Horsetail has the ability to collect excess water which makes it useful in flushing out bacterial infections as well as kidney stones in the urinary tract. It has mild diuretic effects. The plant can be found throughout the Northern Hemisphere.
Horsetail is made up of equisetonin and flavone glycosides.
