Elderberry is a member of the Adoxacea/Sambucaceae or Caprifoliaceae family. The scientific name of Elder is Sambucus nigra. The berries are a black-violet color and produce a deep red juice.
Elderberries contains the flavonoids rutin, isoquertin, and hyperoside. Other constituents include 3% tannins, anthocyan glycosides, an essential oil, and cyanogenic glycosides such as sambunigrin and lecitin.
Elderberries are often used for antiviral and immune boosting effects.
Elderberries have no reported adverse reactions.
