FOS, or fructo-oligosaccharides, are plant sugars that can be found in a variety of fruits, vegetables, and cereals. FOS is made up of a glucose molecule joined to a fructose molecule.
FOS has prebiotic activity. It has the ability to pass through the small intestine undigested and is fermented in the colon. FOS promotes the growth of beneficial bacteria.
FOS has been used to help relieve constipation and traveler's diarrhea.
