Oat (Avena sativa) is a light-green annual grass with a bushy root. Oats originated in England, France, Poland, Germany, and Russia but are now cultivated worldwide. The fruit, leaves, stem, and seeds are are used. Oats are often consumed as part of the diet and are a good source of protein, fat, and fiber. Oats are a great source of beta-glucan, which is a soluble fiber. Beta-glucan is thought to be responsible for the cholesterol-lowering effects of oat. Oat also contains alpha-tocotrienols.
