Vitex, or chaste tree, is found throughout the Mediterranean; however, it is mostly collected in Albania and Morocco. The ripe dried fruit is typically used medicinally. Scientifically, the plant is known as Vitex agnus castus. Vitex is traditionally used for female imbalances. Vitex is often used for menstruation complaints. Vitex is thought to help balance out female hormones. Vitex contains three majoy constituents that are thought responsible for its action, an essential oil, iridoid glycosides, and a flavone. It has been safely used for 2,000 years.
