Rhodiola (Rhodiola rosea) is native to the mountainous regions of Asia, parts of Europe, and the Arctic. Rhodiola is considered an adaptogen (an endurance enhancer). It is often used to combat fatigue and restore energy. Rhodiola may also influence the central nervous system, particularly with the neurotransmitters called monoamines (dopamine and serotonin are examples). The root of the plant is used medicinally. Although there are around 200 Rhodiola species, only Rhodiola rosea is the most effective. Rhodiola contains many active constituents such as the phenylpropanoids rosavin, rosin, and rosarin. It also contains salidroside, a phenylenthanol derivative; flavonoids ((rodiolin, rodionin, rodiosin, acetylrodalgin, tricin); monoterpenes (rosiridol, rosaridin); triterpenes (daucosterol, beta-sitosterol); and phenolic acids (chlorogenic, hydroxycinnamic, and gallic acids).
