Several different forms of chromium exist. The trivalent form is the most stable of the oxidative forms and the one important for humans. Chromium, in this form, is an essential trace mineral found in high quantities in meats and whole grains as well as in tea, cheese, mushrooms, brewer's yeast, and more. Chromium is positively connected to the function and actions of insulin. This relationship also allows chromium to regulate glucose activity; for example, it may help improve glucose tolerance. Chromium is also related to nucleic acid metabolism by aiding the structure and integrity.
Chroumium has the ability to interact with other drugs and supplements. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and vitamin C can increase the absorption and retention of chromium. Nicotinic acid when combined with chromium may improve glucose tolerance. Antacids, H2-Blockers, Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs), and zinc may decrease chromium levels in the body. When chromium is used with beta-blockers, there may be an increase in serum high density lipoprotein (HDL) and with the use of insulin, there may be an increase in hypoglycemia occurrence. Iron and chromium compete for the same transport protein; this may cause iron-deficiency in the body.
Chromium has reported side effects, even when taken in low doses of 200-400 mcg per day. These side effects include headaches, insomnia, sleep disturbances. Irritability, mood change, and some weight gain. There have been cognitive, perceptual and motor dysfunction reported in some extreme cases. A high dose of chromium, 600-2400 mcg per day, may cause anemia, thrombocytopenia, hemolysis, hepatic dysfunction, and renal failure.
