Hibiscus (Hibiscus sabdariffa) is native to Nigeria although it is grown and cultivated around the world in the tropics. The flower has recently been discovered to have potential health benefits. Hibiscus contains a high amount of fruit acids which are attributed with laxative effects due to their poor absorbability. Hibiscus has also demonstrated relaxant and hypotensive effects, and antispasmodic and antibacterial activities. Hibiscus is made up of anthocyans, flavonoids, and mucilages.
Hibiscus flower is sometimes recommended for indigestion and loss of appetite, although its effectiveness for these problems has not been verified. Also unsubstantiated is its use as a remedy for colds, respiratory inflammation, phlegm, constipation, water retention, and circulation disorders.
