Euphrasia Officinalis
Euphrasia Officinalis, more commonly known as Eyebright, is a member of the Scrophulariaceae family. Eyebright can be found growing throughout Europe. The plant is about a foot tall with white, blue, or red-violet flowers. Eyebright has been used for centuries, and was first described in the 14th Century to 'cure all evils of the eye.'
Eyebright has several active constituents: tannins, which are said to have astringent properties, caffeic acid with bacteriostatic activity, and aucubin and iridiod glycosides with purgative abilities.
