Sugar Kelp (Laminaria saccharina) is a brown algae species of kelp. Sugar kelp is a familiar vision to beach-goers. It can often be found washed up along the shore and resembles a lasagna noodle. The names sacchar means sugar. The kelp produces a special sugar known as laminarin. Sugar kelp also contains mannitol and alginic acid. Kelp is well known for a high nutrient content. It contains nearly thirty minerals that nourish the glands (particularly the thyroid and pituitary). This nourishment of the glandular system promotes the balance and function of the metabolism system. Kelp also nourishes the sensory nerves, spinal cord, brain tissue, and brain membranes.
