Bioflavonoids, or flavonoids, can be found in the pigments of fruits and vegetables. Research has shown that about 1 g of flavonoids are consumed daily, mostly as glycosides. Flavonoids demonstrate potential antimutagenicity ability as well as antioxidant activity. Recently, studies have taken a look at flavonoids role in the prevention of carcinogenesis, as well as in the maintenance of capillaries. Bioflavonoids are an important part of the daily diet. They function closely with Vitamin C and it is recommended that the two are consumed together.
Bioflavonoids may interact either positively or negatively with other drugs. Thismay lead to increased risk of side effects and decrease effectiveness of the medications. The only known reaction of bioflavonoids occurs with acyclovir oral, which calls for an increased demand of bioflavonoids in the body. Bioflavonoids also work closely with vitamin C and it is recommended that the two be taken together.
There have not been many reports of side effects when taking bioflavonoids. When reports did occur, they contained symtpoms of catechin such as fever, anemia from a breakdown of red blood cells, and hives.
