Strawberry (Fragaria vesca) is a member of the Rosaceae family. Strawberries are a favorite treat for many people. The fruit and leaf of the plant not only taste good but also have medicinal uses. Strawberry has been in use since the 18th Century. Strawberries are thought to have originated in the temperate zones of Europe although they are cultivated throughout the world. Strawberries contain ellagic acid tannins, oligomeric proanthocyanidins, and flavonoids (including rutin and quercetin). Strawberry is thought to have astringent and diuretic activity. The plant is also rich in vitamin C. Strawberry has traditionally been used for digestive disorders, inflammation, rheumatism, and flushing excess water from the body.
