Witch Hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) originated in the deciduous forests of Atlantic North America.The tree is now common in European gardens and parks and is also cultivated in the subtropics. It is a member of the Hamamelidaceae family. The active constituents of witch hazel include gallotannins, gallic acid, myricetin, quercetin, kaempferol, and catechol derivatives. It possesses astringent, styptic, and anti-inflammatory properties. Witch Hazel has been used for skin inflammation, sore throat, vein problems, and wounds and burns. It is also a remedy for fever, cold, cough and vomiting of blood, and diarrhea.
