L-Methionine, or methionine, is considered an essential amino acid protein. Methionine is provided to the body only through your diet. Good sources of methionine are cheeses, eggs, fish, meat and poultry. Methionine is important to the body due to its role in protein synthesis. L-Methionine is the precursor to SAMe, l-cysteine, taurine, and sulfate. SAMe being crucial due to the involvement of SAMe in the brain and body. Methionine also affects the formation of glucose and D-glucose. Methionine plays a role in the reduction of liver-toxic agents hepatoxins such as acetaminophen and methotrexate. L-Methionine is a sulfur-containing amino acid that is only minimally water-soluble.
Studies have found that when methionine is taken in conjunction to acetaminophen, there can be a decrease in liver damage caused by acetaminophen poisoning. Methionine should not be combined with high diets of salt and nitrite as this may increase the risk of gastric cancer.
Methionine may cause nausea, vomiting, dizziness, drowsiness, hypotension and irritiability. Methionine has also been identified as an aggravate of existing liver damage. As with all drugs or supplements, consult a health care professional before use. For the most part, methionine is well tolerated when taken in the proper dosage.
