Nutmeg (myristica fragrans) is cultivated in the tropical regions of the world. Nutmeg oil can be used in medicinal formulas. Nutmeg contains a volatile oil with the following constituents: myristicin, elemicin, eugenol, isoeugenol, gerinol, pinese, cineole, boreneol, and safrole. The individual constituents have a variety of pharmological effects. Nutmeg has been used for diarrhea, nausea, flatulence, and gastric mucosal inflammation. It has also been used for insomnia, increasing menstrual flow, and as a general tonic.
