Senega, also known as seneca, is a member of the Polygalacceae family. The plant can be found throughout the central and western U.S. The root of the plant is used for both oral and topical medicinal formulas. Senega contains salicylic acid, methyl salicylate, and a saponin mixture known as senegin. Senega has no known interactions with drugs however, prolonged use can lead to gastrointestinal irritation.
Senega is used for the respiratory tract, bronchial asthma, chronic bronchitis, as an expectorant and an emetic. Senega is also used to cause sweating and saliva.
