Suma (Pfaffia paniculata) is a member of the Amaranthaceae family. Suma is often referred to as Brazilian ginseng. The root can be used medicinally. Suma contains pfaffic acid, a nortriterpene and saponin derivatives pfaffosiges A through F. An ethanolic extract from suma has shown mild anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. Suma has been used to enhance immune function related to stress. It has also been used as a tonic to restore the body. Topically, suma can be used for wounds and skin problems.
