Hops (Humulus lupulus) is indigenous to Europe but is not cultivated in Asia, the United States, and elsewhere. Hops is originally associtated with beer as it appeared in the beverage in Holland in the fourteenth Century. The dried flowers are collected for use. There have been nine flavonoids isolated from hops. Hops contains a potent flavonoid phytoestrogen, 8-prenylnaringenin. Hops has been used for insomnia, nervousness, restlessness, anxiety, as an appetite stimulant, a duirtetic, a bitter tonic, and for indigestion. Hops can be used topically as well for leg ulcers and as an anti-bacterial. It is a popular tea that calms and soothes amd a flavoring agent for other foods and beverages.
