Inulin is usually found in plant sources. In the diet, the major sources of inulin are wheat, onions, bananas, leaks, artichokes, and asparagus. Inulin refers to a group of naturally-occuring fructo-oligosaccharides. They belong to a group of carbohydrates called fructans. Inulins have a sweet taste and distinguished texture, as a result, inulin is often added to various foods. Inulin is only slightly digested in the small intestines. Inulin promotes the growth of beneficial bacteria, prebiotics, in the colon.
Inulin has been used for obesity and weight loss, improving gastrointestinal function, and as a food additive, among other activities.
