Pomegranate has been shown in scientific studies to benefit cardiovascular function, healthy cell replication, and antioxidation protection. These health benefits are contributed by phytochemical compounds such as ellagic acid, gallic acid, anthocyanins, and tannins, including punicalagin, and other powerful phytonutrients.
The deep reddish fruit of the Italian blood orange (Citrus sinensis) is due to the presence of naturally occuring pigments called anthocyanins. Blood oranges are an excellent source of vitamin C, potassium, carotenoids (like beta carotene), and flavonoids. However, unlike other "blond" varieties, the blood orange contains the powerful antioxidants delphinidin-3-glucoside, cyanidin-3-glucoside and cyanidin-3 (6-malonyl) glucoside.
